The 9th Ordinary Session Of The African Union Assembly, Accra: Ghana: 1-3 July 2007

Zimbabwe will participate at the 9 th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the African Union which is will be held in Accra Ghana from 1 to 3 July 2007. The Assembly will be preceded by the 14 th Session of the Permanent Representatives Committee, from 25 to 26 June 2007 and the 11 th Ordinary Session of the Executive Council, from 28 to 29 June 2007.

The main agenda item of the Assembly will be the Grand Debate on the Union Government. There are two schools of thought on the African Union Government. The Pan – Africanist school of thought led by Presidents Muammar Gaddafi of Libya and Abdoulaye Wade of Senegal and the African Union Commission Chairperson, Mr. Alpha Konare, favours the immediate creation of the Union Government. The Gradualists school of thought favours a gradual approach. This is the school of thought that informs the SADC position on the formation of the African Union Government. SADC envisages that the effective establishment of the Union Government will occur when the continent attains higher levels of economic and political integration based on Regional Economic Blocs. Zimbabwe heads to Accra carrying the SADC banner.
