SADC ELECTORAL OBSERVER MISSION LAUNCHES THE 2019 MAURITIUS NATIONAL ASSEMBLY ELECTIONS PRELIMINARY STATEMENT

Head of the Southern African Development Community Electoral Observation Mission (SEOM) to the 2019 National Assembly Elections in the Republic of Mauritius, Hon. Lieutenant General (Retired) Dr. Sibusiso Moyo, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade of the Republic of Zimbabwe, released the SEOM's Preliminary Statement following the elections held on 7th November 2019.

The SEOM Head of Mission noted that the pre-election and voting phases of the 2019 National Assembly Elections were professionally organised, conducted in an orderly, peaceful and free atmosphere which enabled the voters to express their democratic will and allowed those who sought political office to campaign freely. He further urged the people of Mauritius to maintain their democratic spirit until the conclusion of the process.

The Head of SEOM was accompanied by Alternate Head, Senator Ambassador Simon Khaya Moyo from Zimbabwe as well.

The event was attended by senior officials from the Government of Mauritius, Heads and representatives of Diplomatic Missions accredited to the Republic of Mauritius, representatives of United Nations agencies, representatives of political parties, Civil Society Organisations, religious organisations and the media.

The SADC Preliminary Statement was released alongside the statements of the; African Union Electoral Observation Mission (AUEOM), headed by Her Excellency, Dr Speciosa Wandira-Kazibwe, former Vice-President of the Republic of Uganda and Head of the African Union Electoral Observation Mission to the Republic of Mauritius, the Electoral Commissions Forum of SADC countries(ECF-SADC) Electoral Observation Mission to the 2019 National Assembly Elections in the Republic of Mauritius, headed by Mr Glen Mashinini, Chairperson of the Independent Electoral Commission of the Republic of South Africa and the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie Mission to the 2019 National Assembly Elections in the Republic of Mauritius headed by His Excellency Mr. Mohamed Aujjard, Former Minister of Justice of the Kingdom of Morocco.

The SEOM to the 2019 National Assembly Elections in the Republic of Mauritius was constituted by His Excellency Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa, President of the Republic of Zimbabwe, in his capacity as the Chairperson of the Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation. The SEOM deployed its observers to twenty (20) of the twenty-one (21) constituencies in the country. The SEOM will submit its Final Report to the Government of the Republic of Mauritius and the Electoral Supervisory Commission (ESC) within thirty (30) days of the conclusion of the electoral process in accordance with the SADC Principles and Guidelines Governing Democratic Elections of 2015.
